The Horizons Pre-AP/IB Literature program is designed to prepare students for the challenges of both AP/IB classroom assignments and the timed testing environment. Students will read classic and contemporary works of literature that were written for a collegiate audience. In class, discussions of plot and theme are supplemented with analysis of writing style and literary devices, so that students become both better readers and writers. Literary analysis and required essays conform to AP and IB standards for length, development of ideas, and mechanics.

In the Upper Years program, students begin the crucial transition from literal thinking to symbolic thinking. This is a path of development which will serve them well as they begin to read classic works of English-language literature. At the same time, research skills are introduced and students are expected to be able to build sustained arguments with well-supported factual evidence. Essay proofreading skills are honed at this level, and teachers emphasize the importance of the revision process.

Bridging the gap between elementary and middle school language programs can be challenging for Middle Years students. In sixth and seventh grade, students are getting their first direct experience with longer non-fiction writing. Horizons instructors work to develop true competency in the skills necessary to transition from writing simple compositions to writing complete, articulate, and well-reasoned reports.

Our Early Years writing program doesn't just teach reading and writing skills-- Horizons instructors also work to find and nurture students' natural passion for language and personal expression. We engage students on personal level in order to develop their reading, comprehension, and reporting skills. Along the way, we also heavily emphasize composition writing that is grammatically and logically sound.
